Press Release
for release on January 27, 2004
Watermark Navigation Systems is pleased to announce that on December 8, 2003 the United States Coast Guard enacted a long awaited regulation, allowing the use of Light Emitting Diodes (LEDs) in Private Aids to Navigation (PATONS). The new rule effective March 8, 2004 will replace the requirement to use tungsten-incandescent bulbs with a performance based standard that will allow the use of LEDs.
Over half of the aids-to-navigation registered in the United States are "private". Private Aids to Navigation are marine navigation aids that are owned and maintained by bodies other than the Coast Guard such as state and municipal governments, private businesses, corporations, and other federal agencies.
The main advantages of LEDs over incandescent bulbs are their durability and energy efficiency. Able to burn up to 100,000 hours, LEDs last about 20 times longer than the best incandescent bulbs, and use 90 percent less electricity. The new regulation notes that LEDs "may reduce the consumption of power and simplify the maintenance of PATONs".
Watermark Navigation Systems is a United States dealer for SEALITE Solar Laterns. SEALITE has been manufacturing LED lanterns in volume since 1997 and is the world's largest manufacturer of marine LED lanterns, with 27 models and 9 different LED lens designs in production. Jeff Procter, Managing Director of SEALITE states that "these new rules are great news for private users; SEALITE LED lanterns are a fantastic product which allow operators to install a unit that will operate independently, and largely maintenance free for years. We have the largest range of LED lanterns on the market and the strongest warranty in the industry, so we feel we are ready to service the needs of private users in the US." Paul Goodwin, Managing Director of Watermark Navigation Systems, stated "We are excited about the opportunities that arise from this regulation change. It provides a great alternative for PATON users, allowing them to use a less expensive, more durable and maintenance-free light." [See Lights & Marine Lanterns for more details.]
